During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, nearly all Medi-Cal members were able to stay enrolled in their current health coverage regardless of changes in eligibility or status. Legislation was signed in December 2022, allowing states to begin removing ineligible members from their Medi-Cal programs as early a July 1, 2023.
This means millions of people may no longer qualify for Medi-Cal coverage!
Meet Rhonda:
In 2020, Rhonda became unemployed and enrolled in Medi-Cal coverage. During the summer of 2021, she started a new job.
When the open enrollment season began that fall, Rhonda waived employer-sponsored coverage with her employer and maintained her Medi-Cal benefits.
When Medi-Cal renewals and eligibility reviews resume, Rhonda realizes she will no longer qualify for Medi-Cal coverage because her income has changed.
Rhonda asks her company's Human Resources contact for employer-sponsored health plan information. She will be eligible to sign up outside of the open enrollment period due to her qualifying life event.
She realizes that the employer sponsored plan is too expensive and decides to enroll in a more affordable Covered California plan which helps save her money each month.
She discusses her options with her Human Resources contact, including an employer-sponsored plan.
